New website launched to showcase the transformation of Sutton Town Centre

Sutton town centre is changing and many of you will have seen or heard about current and future schemes that are part of our ambitious plans for the transformation of the area. 

This week, we launched a new website to showcase all these plans so that residents and businesses and investors can see how everything fits together in one place. The website is for anyone wanting to find out the latest updates about the Council’s key regeneration projects and plans for new homes, office and co-working spaces, retail units, new culture/leisure venues and much more.

There are five key projects to bring our main town centre back to life: 

• Northern Gateway (new home for Sutton College with new council homes)
• Oru Sutton (in the former BHS building and above H&M)
• 137-145 HIgh Street (the old Vision Express and Top Shop stores)
• St Nicholas & Civic sites (the current shopping centre and council offices sites)
• Throwley Yard (behind the old Wilko store)

These projects highlight our commitment to revitalising Sutton town centre, enhancing its appeal to all our residents, businesses and visitors, and making Sutton a thriving place to live, work and study. 

One of the latest examples of regeneration in Sutton town centre has been the development of Oru Space on the upper floors of the former BHS store, which has been empty since 2016. Oru Sutton is an exciting and sustainable business offering our residents, businesses and visitors a vibrant and inclusive space to work and relax. Last week, I was delighted to attend the official launch of Oru Sutton along with the Deputy Mayor of London for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe. The project is supported financially by the Mayor of London's Good Growth Fund and his Grow Back Greener Fund. 

All these plans will enable us to encourage more people from across our borough to visit the town centre both during the day and at night, bring long-term empty buildings back into use and create new jobs for local residents. 

The next new development for residents and visitors to enjoy will be at Throwley Yard, which opens later this year. This will be a new cultural space for residents and visitors with an independent cinema, DJ school and performance space.
