Your Council Tax and Budget questions answered

This week I was delighted to be joined by Anita Maullin from Volunteer Centre Sutton and two of the Young Commissioners - Ayman and Jasmin - to host a live stream event that gave everyone the opportunity to ask questions about our budget and council tax.

It was great to see so many questions submitted both before the event and on the night and I’m so grateful that Anita and the Young Commissioners were able to join us and give up their evening to take part.

The recording of the livestream can be viewed on our YouTube channel. Over the coming days I will answer the questions that we weren’t able to reach on the night and these will be posted on the council’s social media channels.

On Monday evening Sutton councillors will debate the council’s budget proposals for 2024/25. The meeting will take place at 7.00 pm at Sutton Civic Offices and this meeting is open to the public to attend or to watch online. To view details, how to log into the livestream and the agenda, visit the Council meeting page.

The budget proposals highlight how Sutton, like all other local authorities across the country, are facing huge financial pressures. These financial challenges are the result of years of government under-funding, higher costs and inflation, increased demands for social care services for adults and children, along with the rising numbers of people finding themselves homeless.

I really hope that as many residents as possible will watch the livestream to understand the challenges the Council is facing and why we’re being forced to put up council tax.

Despite all of these challenges we remain ambitious for Sutton and we have exciting plans to improve life for our local residents, create jobs and help tackle climate change. We are committed to keeping Sutton a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Leader of the Council,
Councillor Ruth Dombey
