Free NHS health checks
Are you between 40 and 74 years old? Get Your Free NHS Health Check
The NHS Health Check is designed to help you live a longer, healthier life by spotting early signs of serious health conditions like stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementia.
Who is it for?
If you are aged between 40 and 74 and haven't already been diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or stroke, you'll receive an invitation from your GP for a free NHS Health Check every five years.
Why is it important?
Even if you feel well, an NHS Health Check provides a clearer picture of your overall health and helps you take action to reduce your risk of these conditions. The good news is that many of these conditions can be prevented, even if they run in your family.
Factors that increase your risk
While the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and kidney disease increases with age, certain factors can put you at even greater risk:
- age: older individuals face an increased risk
- ethnicity: some ethnic groups, such as people from South Asian and African-Caribbean backgrounds, have an increased risk
- smoking status: smokers are at increased risk
- family history: a family history of these diseases increases your personal risk
- lack of exercise: people with little to no physical activity are at increased risk
What to expect at your health check
During your NHS Health Check, a healthcare professional will:
- record your height, weight, and waist measurement.
- perform quick and simple blood tests to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- ask you questions about your family history and lifestyle habits.
By identifying any concerns early, health professionals can work with you to lower your chances of developing these health problems in the future. Investing in this free check improves your chances of living a healthier life.
