More new council homes for Sutton?

Proposals for 11 council-owned sites will be recommended to the Housing, Economy and Business Committee on 29 January 2019. The proposal builds on the success of our current new build programme in construction in Wallington and Beddington.

The locations include making better use of residential garage sites on council estates. Other council and privately owned land may also be considered.

Councillor Jayne McCoy, Deputy Leader of the Council & Chair of the Housing, Economy & Business Committee, said: “I’m delighted we are in a position to build more council homes.”

“The aim of this programme is to deliver a minimum of 81 new homes. If we can build more than that, we will."

In October 2018, more than £6m was allocated from the London Mayor’s Building Council Homes for Londoners programme, and the council will contribute through council borrowing.

Councillor McCoy said the homes will also bring jobs as the workforce will be recruited locally where possible and job opportunities created by the contractor.

If approved on 29th January and planning permission granted, it is anticipated building works will start by April 2020.

Council officers will continue to review more land that might be suitable for housing.
