Have your say on transport choices in Sutton

The new Sustainable Transport Strategy is designed to create opportunities for its residents to travel safely, actively and healthily around the borough, and to support Sutton’s growth.

Sutton has the highest number of potential trips by foot or cycle of any London borough. However, more people in Sutton use their car for trips of under 3km than in most other London boroughs.

The Strategy sets out a range of potential measures that can be taken at a local level to give residents more choice in how they travel, while also outlining where more investment in local transport networks is needed from the Mayor of London and central government.

As well as giving residents more choice, the Strategy aims to improve the quality of life of Sutton’s residents. The Council wants to ensure improved road safety, less air pollution and more accessible transport, especially for children, families, older people and other people who are vulnerable.

The Strategy supports the Council’s updated Environment Strategy and Climate Emergency Response plan. It replaces the Council’s current Sustainable Transport Strategy published in 2015 and will have Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) status. This means that developers will need to address the transport implications of their proposed developments when submitting planning applications.

Councillor Manuel Abellan, Deputy Leader and Chair of the Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee, said:

“This ambitious strategy sets out how sustainable transport improvements can make a real difference to the quality of life of our residents, while also tackling the climate emergency.

“Making it easier to travel sustainably in Sutton can make people healthier, improve air quality and enhance neighbourhoods, as well as supporting Sutton’s growth at this critical time.”
