Becoming a Parent…

Becoming a parent can be exciting, wonderful and fulfilling. It can also be daunting, challenging and exhausting. There are plenty of expensive, conflicting manuals published that can often leave you feeling more confused, but now you can access expert advice and guidance in one place online.

Sutton Council has launched an award winning online training programme for all parents, grandparents and carers. It is called The Solihull Approach Parenting Programme and the 13 modules will help you understand your child’s development. Parents and families have contributed to the development of the courses and the programme is designed to enable you to be the best mum, dad or carer for your child.

The course can be done at a time and place that suits you and fits into your family life. Best of all, it is free. It is suitable for all parents/carers, including those who have a child with special needs, such as autism or ADHD.

I spoke to Rachael, a single parent for her 1 year old son. She told me that since completing the programme she feels more confident, is able to relate to her son differently, and has recommended the programme to some of her friends. Her and her friends are able to chat with one another about what they have learnt and how they now understand and see things differently.

I would encourage all parents, parents to be, grandparents, carers and all those involved in supporting a child, to register now.
