The Council is currently reviewing its Local Plan. It will set out how Sutton will develop over the next 15-20 years.

The first stage of consultation on the Issues and Preferred Options document, is expected to take place in early 2023.

Call for Sites

To improve our understanding of potential future development opportunities in Sutton, the Council is carrying out a 'Call for Sites' exercise between 16 September and 18 November 2022. This is a part of the initial evidence base gathering stage to help support the preparation of the new local plan.

What is the ‘Call for Sites’?

The Call for Sites is a fact-finding exercise. It is a means by which the Council encourages landowners, developers, and the community to provide information relating to potential development sites in the borough. These development sites could be for residential, commercial, or other land uses (e.g. leisure, education, healthcare).

It is important to note that the Call for Sites is not a formal stage of consultation on the new local plan. It is an evidence gathering stage, with the aim to identify as many sites as possible and compile this information into a database. The database will be a valuable resource for the Council to utilise throughout the local plan-making process.

The Call for Sites will be an open and transparent process. Sites received are not automatically earmarked for development, nor do they gain any special status. They are merely collated to be subject to further assessment.

What happens next?

The Call for Sites will yield a number of responses and potential development sites. The information received will be compiled and assessed against a series of technical criteria to better understand which sites have the potential to be suitable for development, and are deliverable in the timescale of the new local plan. The assessment of the sites will occur through a separate technical exercise called the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA).

At the appropriate stage of the local plan-making process, the Council will set out those sites which it believes represent sustainable development and those that will contribute to a positive future in Sutton. Only at this stage will the sites be subject to formal consultation with the general public and stakeholders, who will then be able to feedback their views.
