COP26 events in Sutton this November

This November, in Glasgow, the UK will take centre stage hosting the UN Climate Change Conference. Decisions will be made that could change the lives of generations to come. 

This significant event is providing a national and global platform for conversation. 

Here in Sutton there will be a range of activities and events to drive this conversation locally and support climate action.

Letters to the Earth Exhibition

We’re encouraging residents young and old to share their vision for a better world in a Letter to the Earth.

Part of a global campaign, a Letter to the Earth is your opportunity to respond to the climate crisis and express what’s important to you. It can be a letter to or from the Earth, another species, another person or moment in time. Or it could be a piece of creative artwork, reflecting the world you wish to live in.

Letters and artwork will become part of an exciting exhibition across Honeywood Museum and Whitehall Historic House from the 4 - 20 November. The exhibition will show how Sutton residents are being impacted by climate change, exploring their worries, hopes and dreams for the future and inspiring us to act now to protect our planet. 

Create your letter or picture at home and submit via email, to heritage.submissions@sutton.gov.uk, or drop off to the front desks at Honeywood, Whitehall or Sutton Central Library by Sunday 24 October.

LBS Panel Discussions

Sutton are hosting three panel discussions with local and regional experts, giving residents and businesses insight and opportunity for questions. These are all free to attend.

1. Living and working sustainably: How individuals and businesses can make a difference

Tuesday 2 November, 19:00 - 20:30 at the Sound Lounge, Sutton

We welcome Sue Riddlestone, OBE, from Bioregional, Hannah White from The Sound Lounge and Elly, sustainable fashion blogger and textile artisit, to provide insight into how individuals and businesses can make simple but significant steps to living and working more sustainably. Hear how these three local businesses are leading the way on the road to zero carbon.

2. Managing resources and reducing waste: how and why we should take a circular approach to minimise our waste production.

Wednesday 10 November, 19:00 - 20:30, online

There will be a range of insight and tips on how to reduce your waste and keep your products in action for as long as possible saving both the planet and your wallet! Hear from Cat Fletcher, Co-founder of Freegle, a free community re-use platform that's rapidly gaining users in Sutton, Prof. Dr. David Greenfield from the London branch of the global Circular Economy Club and Pauline Metivier from ReLondon, a pan London partnership revolutionising the way we manage resources.

3. Energy and Buildings: Creating new energy efficient buildings and retrofitting existing homes

Monday 8 November, 19:00 - 20:30, online

An exciting look at how the building industry is adapting to make sustainable buildings and the steps individuals can take to retrofit their homes to reduce energy consumption and emissions. We'll be hearing from Christian Dimbleby, from Architype, the architects behind Sutton's Passivhaus schools, Russell Smith of Retrofitworks, who turned his Sutton home into the first zero-carbon residence and Jon Warren from Energiesprong - an exciting new project piloting in Sutton.

Fast Fashion Therapy Workshop

Set in the unique Tudor setting of Whitehall Historic House, this workshop will introduce you to darning and a patching technique inspired by the Japanese art of 'Boro' to help you mend and up-cycle old or damaged clothes. The workshop will take you through the basics of these 'visible mending' techniques to leave you feeling inspired to keep fixing at home! Both of the techniques only use hand sewing so can be easily carried on at home or elsewhere.

All materials and kit will be provided in the workshop.

All ages are welcome although children will need to be accompanied by an adult as we will be using scissors and sharp needles.

Reusable Nappies: Get started on the switch

This informal information session is a great way for parents and carers to learn more about reusable nappies and gain the confidence to make the switch from disposables. With each baby using an average of 4000 nappies, even just one nappy a day makes a huge difference to the environment. 

Sarah Wheeldon, Sutton Council Environment Projects Officer, will lead this relaxed information session, sharing her experiences of using reusable nappies and demonstrating the range of options available.

This session will be hosted online on Thursday 11 November, 10 - 11am and is free to attend.

Schools public speaking competition

We're excited to partner with Sutton Speakeasy, a Toastmasters International Club, to deliver a public speaking competion for schools on the theme of Climate Action. 

Students from a number of Sutton's senior schools will compete on the 17th November. The event is not open to the public, but we'll be sharing some highlights and details of the winners!
