Why recycle?
It costs a lot less for waste to be recycled than it does for it to be sent to landfill. At a time when the council is faced with unprecedented cuts to the annual budget we need to save money spent on disposing of waste to spend on other important council services.
There are also many beneficial reasons to recycling such as:
- conserving our natural resources and help protect the environment
- saving energy; using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses significantly less energy than producing products from raw materials
- reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill which contributes to the production of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas
- reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and increasing recycling contributes to the achievement of our Environment Strategy ambitions and declared Climate Emergency.
How we help you to recycle
- we collect recycling from households and flats every weeks
- we provide recycling bins to all households (Flats above shops are provided with clear bags)
- the recycling collection crews collect any additional recycling left by the side of the recycling bins in a cardboard box or clear sack.
- community engagement officers visit those households where we notice the recycling bin is contaminated to offer recycling guidance
- there are 16 recycling banks across the borough for books, CDs, DVDs and computer games. Items collected in these banks will be donated to the British Heart Foundation to raise money for charity. There are also 24 recycling bins for textiles across the borough.
